Equinox: New World Language on Saturday

Stop by the new Cult Status Gallery this Saturday | 8pm – Midnight

Art groups, (or individual artists),1 giant room. Complete a 1,500 sq ft. installation. Alluding to the rhythms of MC Escher’s tessellations, the modern street-art themed mix-up, and, yes, probably vampires; using the burgeoning art scene in Minneapolis as a platform for a new world language. . . Silent auction. Music provided by Butcher’s Bag. It Will Rock.

Last Call @ The Uptown Bar

The Uptown Bar was demolished today.

I started sneaking into the Uptown when I was 15 to see the bands i loved play insane sets so close their sweat was dropping on you… it was the first (and last) bar i ever got carried out of, the first (and last) place I started a fist fight, the place where I met and fell in love with my first real lover and one of my very favorite places to work.

Although I stopped hanging out there a long time ago, I still feel sad tonight.

Contagious Next Saturday Night

Contagious will feature new artwork by Tara Costello, Jennifer Davis & Amy Rice

If you come here often you know that I’m a huge fan of Davis’ work – I only have a couple of her prints but I’m determined to own at least one of her paintings, at some point… I haven’t seen Amy’s work in person yet – but it looks sweet (reminds me of old vintage illustrations) and Tara is a well-known abstract painter – if you’re in Minneapolis you’ve certainly seen her work.

With these 3 popular / much-loved local art chicas, I expect that this show will be packed. Looking forward to heading down there Saturday night..

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009
Preview 3 – 7pm | Reception 7 – 10pm [More Info]

Train Brain: Local App Does Good

Minneapolis Light-Rail IPhone App, developed/designed by locals Andy Atkinson and Nate Kadlac is getting a lot of praise around town..

This $1.99 iPhone application is for Twin Cities Metro Transit light-rail riders. You can walk around with a paper schedule in your pocket or pull up a PDF of that schedule on your iPhone, but with a couple of taps, Train Brain can tell you when the next train is coming and how much the fare will cost as well as offer a countdown to the train’s arrival.

The only thing that came to mind after talking to Andy (Andy Atkinson, Train Brain Developer) was this: Metro Transit ought to buy this app and get behind it. With the continued rollout of light rail in the Twin Cities, and likely delays as the system expands, there is no question riders will need better tools to manage their ridership instead of just a PDF of a paper schedule or, God forbid, having to carry a schedule around in your pocket.”

Taking the Uptown Out of Uptown

Switchblade Comb, Star Tribune and City Pages all reporting that the end is near for one of our city’s most iconic live venues, the Uptown Bar – at least in Uptown..

“The Minneapolis Planning Commission has approved the Uptown Bar owner Frank Toonen’s application that would allow him to tear down the bar and replace it with a three-story retail unit. The proposed retail building is being developed by Urban Anthology who are responsible for Victoria Secret and American Apparel opening in the Uptown neighborhood. The last chance the bar has for staying in its present location is if the Heritage Preservation Commission intervenes at their next meeting on September 1.”
- Switchblade Comb

UPDATE 09/11 :
“November 1 ends it. I suggest keeping your evenings free and plan on going into work late from October 1 – November 1. There are gonna be some amazing shows that last month that the bar is open. Bands that you would never imagine playing the Uptown Bar will be playing the Uptown Bar.”

help keep uptown open late

one of the best late night / early am places in minneapolis is in immediate danger .. the uptown diner is an after-bar staple – with doors open friday am through sunday pm – one of the few places you can get a decent meal at 4am

after 6 years on the corner of Hennepin & 26th (with no notable problems with their neighbors), someone has decided that the uptown diner shouldn’t be open late night. what started with someone calling / complaining about after-bar noise became a complete mess when it was discovered that the diner hasn’t ever actually had the zoning permits necessary for their late night hours

city council member ralph remington has issued them a temporary permit (allowing them to stay open until 2pm) but they are attending the east isles neighborhood council meeting on tuesday in order to appeal to members to issue them the full permit, which will allow them to resume their normal hours

please stop in sometime this weekend and sign their petition for the meeting on tuesday

thirst is coming..

Chan-wook Park’s vampire thriller “Thirst” is coming to minneapolis (and probably a theater near you non-minneapolis dwellers, as well)

but the controversy over Korea’s censorship of the “priest turns vampire after failed medical experiment (?!)” film trailers & press images is overshadowing the film itself.. see the different trailer versions and learn more about the censorship here

thirst will open at the lagoon theater on september 4th, 2009
