Contagious Next Saturday Night

Contagious will feature new artwork by Tara Costello, Jennifer Davis & Amy Rice

If you come here often you know that I’m a huge fan of Davis’ work – I only have a couple of her prints but I’m determined to own at least one of her paintings, at some point… I haven’t seen Amy’s work in person yet – but it looks sweet (reminds me of old vintage illustrations) and Tara is a well-known abstract painter – if you’re in Minneapolis you’ve certainly seen her work.

With these 3 popular / much-loved local art chicas, I expect that this show will be packed. Looking forward to heading down there Saturday night..

to-do lists

making lists.. crossing things off lists.. this is a huge part of my life.

for those who don’t know, i recently joined the millions of unemployed folks in this country. i’m trying not to take it too personally. i know i did a great job and that i was appreciated there – the economics simply dictated massive layoffs at tc. honestly, i feel good that i survived the 2008 cuts and made it to the finals. damn. i knew i should have asked for less money when they offered me the position ;)

but what’s past is past and i’ll land on my feet as always. it only means that my lists of things to-do are growing even longer than normal.. that said, here are some things that you should be aware of this week:

solid gold is playing @ the uptown bar this wednesday (jan 28th) – prob $5-8 dollars @ the door and well worth it..

Cliche is having a fashion show @ old arizona this thursday (jan 29) from 8pm – 10pm, featuring local designers: Amanda Christine Designs, kjurek couture, Ivan Idland, Martiza Ramirez/Anthem Heart, Karmadandi, Niki English, Jenny Carle, Arwyn Birch, Peloria, Renate Adjei, Red Shoe Clothing Co., Emily Weich, Carmichael Claith.. Tickets are $8.00 (very limited space so tickets needs to be purchased in advance!) and you can get them at the store (2403 Lyndale Avenue s).

steve tenebrini of squad19 has some super cool screen prints available that feature artwork from his daughter & glow-in-the-dark eyes! only $50 bucks (if i were still employed I would snatch the one with gene simmons up immediately)..

rift magazine needs your attention for a minute… this is my favorite local mag and i hope that everyone will cough up a few bucks so we can see another issue in print. sure, the online version is great, but it’s nice to have something you can actually touch. i feel so “oldschool” when i actually hold a paper anymore.. go there and make a donation to the worthy cause – it’ll make you feel good. really.

more coming soon.. no really – i’m back.

best bet for last-minute shopping

now i know where i’m doing all my last minute xmas shopping – the soo gallery is having a carzy cool “arts and crafts” sale this saturday..

now i know the phrase “arts and crafts” may freak some people out (it certainly gives me the creeps) but this will be cool – think more like robot love.. or patina (on mescaline) .. with stuff to funk-up your home (art, throw pillows, toys, etc) and stuff to funk-up your person (jewelry, bags, etc)..

the list of participating artists is impressive : Jennifer Davis (if you missed her last show at the soo you should definitely go to this thing) Joe Sinness, Bethany Kalk, Liseli Polivka, Amy Rice, Lindsey Borgerson, Brittany Foster, Glamoramapuss, Emily Johnson, Annika Kaplan, Margaret Nimocks, Sisbro, Collaboration Thursday with Swank Dollar, Drive by Bags, Zeichen Press & many more ..

this is also the last weekend that sean tubridy’s “toys on roids” will be up..

art shows last night

everything about last night was .. not normal. started out with a few people meeting up @ a friend’s place and somehow we decided that piling seven or so people into one vehicle was a good idea.. many weird dramas took place between 10pm and 3am (that will not be detailed here.. you’re welcome) but we managed to squeeze in 3 art shows:

rhea pappas @ the fallout urban art center
the senior show for rhea, celebrating her graduation from mcad. i had no idea her images were so huge.. some great images here (i am trying to convince her to become a suicide girls photographer on the side – we’ll see) check out her books on her site

the support show @ art of this gallery
silent auction to benefit “free arts mn” non-profit group, with works by john grider, Tara Costello and many more.. insanely good prices on these works – unfortunately – i’m broke from x-mas shopping :(
decent turnout though and the awesome little thrift store next door stayed open (which came in super handy when gina had a serious wardrobe malfunction – thanks to the very nice girl @ the counter who re-opened the store for her)

opening for allen brewer @ umber studios
this show had an impressive turnout – the studio was packed with very good-looking people.. yeah it’s tiny but that’s still impressive for it’s location. my first time @ umber and i liked it. alot. excellent presentation & friendly bar service (though the food was extremely .. odd – oh well, didn’t come for the food anyway)

stopped by the leaning tower as well, to see john erste’s new mural over the bar (and for the best drink special in town – 2 for 1 on ANY DRINK) .. check it out the next time you go there

save polaroid. save the world.

so you’ve heard of the “save polaroid” campaign.. but did you know is was a local thing?

On February 8, 2008, Polaroid Corporation announced that it would discontinue production of all instant film… shortly thereafter, local artist sean tubridy & some friends took up the cause and created the phenomena known around the world as savepolaroid.com, with the modest slogan of “save polaroid. save the world.”

my first thought when i saw the site was, “cool” and second, “that guy has way too much time on his hands”.. but i was wrong. in fact, it appears that this guy may be one of the busiest guys in minneapolis.

when tubridy’s not running around taking polaroids of toys (and trying to save the world), he’s busy creating and selling his graphic illustrations, collaborating with the soo gallery to create his first book “toys on roids”.. and running his web and graphic design company, blue over blue..

he’s also participating in a show at the soo visual arts center – which ends christmas eve.. who knew?

about Free Arts Minnesota:
Free Arts Minnesota is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the healing powers of artistic expression into the lives of abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families.

In 1997, Free Arts for Abused Children of Minnesota (Free Arts) began serving children in residential treatment centers, battered women’s shelters, and therapeutic preschools based on the theory that for abused children, art and positive adult relationships are not a luxury but a necessity.

Free Arts programs serve to interrupt the cycle of violence. Through painting, drawing, music, writing, drama, and other creative avenues, Free Arts serves as a catalyst in helping children communicate and express themselves in new ways.
