It’s Easy to Help Haiti

On January 12, 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, reducing much of its capital to rubble. It was the worst earthquake in the region in more than 200 years, with as many as 50,000 feared dead. The devastation has created serious obstacles to those attempting to deliver promised foreign aid.. Thousands of bodies fill the streets and as many men, women and children are now experiencing day two of no food / water or medical help.

It has never been easier to help – Simply text the word HAITI to 90999 you will have just donated $10 to the American Red Cross for Haiti. If you want to donate $100, do it 10 times. The donation will appear on your next phone bill.. All four major carriers (At&T, Sprint, Verison and T-Mobile) are now waiving fees for Haiti SMS donations.

In addition, American Express, MasterCard and Visa say they will waive transaction fees when people use credit cards to donate to charities helping in Haiti.

10 Years of Isolation

This man endured 10 years of solitary confinement – I can’t even begin to wrap my mind around that experience.

“From May 1980 to May 1990, nuclear scientist Hussain Al-Shahristani — Iraq’s current oil minister — was thrown in solitary confinement and subjected to torture. Last month, in a revelational and deeply personal interview, Al-Shahristani spoke to The BBC about the experience.

Inspired by the moving story, Swiss filmmaker and animator Mato Atom created a brilliant new campaign for BBC World Service, capturing in abstract form and minimal narration the devastating reality of solitary confinement.”

GiveMN.org makes being good easy

As I get older and feel a little bit more like a “grown up” each year, I’ve started to get this nagging feeling that I should be donating to .. something. Volunteering sounds cool but probably isn’t going to happen anytime soon, since I’m busy as hell. Instead I’m gonna skip a few lattes this week and donate to a group in our community.. found this site that lets you easily donate to nonprofits in MN – Check out the Soo Visual Arts Center page..
